How to Tell If Chicken Has Gone Bad

How to Tell If Chicken Has Gone Bad

Chicken can be very dangerous if it goes bad. The worst-case scenario is salmonella, a bacteria that causes serious illness. Salmonella can be killed by cooking your chicken thoroughly. Unfortunately, a number of other bacteria still leave toxins behind after cooking, which means that if your chicken goes bad, you should throw it out. Thankfully, you can spot the signs of bad chicken easily. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Check the "Do Not Sell" date on the chicken's package before you buy it. It's the easiest and simplest way to confirm whether it should be eaten. While you can still cook chicken after its "Do Not Sell" date, you run more of a risk.

    2

Find out how long the chicken was sitting before it was cooked. Chicken should be refrigerated at 40 degrees or below before cooking, and raw chicken should never be kept in the refrigerator for longer than 48 hours. With frozen chicken, you should eat it within six months after freezing. Similarly, leftover cooked chicken should be refrigerated promptly after your meal and you shouldn't wait more than two or three days before eating it.

    3

Smell the chicken. An odd odor is a good way to determine its relative freshness. Bad chicken tends to smell sour or have a scent like ammonia, but whatever the scent, there will be very little question about whether it is fit to eat or not.

    4

Feel the consistency of the chicken's surface. Bad chicken will have a slimy or unpleasant feeling to it. If the chicken has already been washed, it may have a grayish or yellowish color to it as well.

    5

Monitor the chicken's taste when you eat it. Though good-tasting chicken may not be bacteria free, chicken which tastes funny or is "off" is definitely trouble. If it tastes bad, don't swallow it.

Diet Recipes for Gout Sufferers

Diet Recipes for Gout Sufferers

Having gout doesn't mean you have to start eating a bland diet. There are still many tasty foods that actually aid your body in keeping your uric acid levels low. Fresh fruits, rice, whole wheat bread are all great for gout sufferers and should make up 40 percent of their diet. Lean meats like fish, turkey and chicken breast are also allowed.

Food Preparation

Since salt is discouraged, try using other herbs and spices to flavor your food. Garlic, in particular, is a good choice because it is known to lower uric acid levels. Bake or grill your meats rather than frying them in oil. Drink lots of water or prepare fruit smoothies or fruit juices for a drink. Ingredients like bacon, creams and cheeses can be used in moderate amounts.

Noodles with Parmesan Cheese Sauce

Ingredients: 1 lb thin noodles, 1 cup grated parmesan cheese, 2 crushed cloves garlic, 4 tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander, 6 tbsp olive oil, tsp salt, tsp black pepper.

Preparation: Place noodles in pot of boiling water for 11 minutes or until cooked. Drain noodles and place in bowl. Stir remaining ingredients into noodles and serve while warm.

How to do The Lemon Juice Cleanse

How to and what to expect while doing the lemon juice cleanse.

Instructions

    1

Cleansing is important for our health, clearing out toxins to keep our bodies functioning at their best is the goal of cleaning. Pollution from the environment, stress, plus additives (pesticides, chemical colors plus flavorings) in our water and food are stored in our organs and fatty tissue. These toxins build up in our bodies over time, these toxins can build on the walls of our small intestines and make it hard for us to absorb the food we eat. Cleanses will give us more energy, improve our immune system and relieve various symptoms.

A very good cleanse which gives great results is the "lemon juice cleanse" some call it "the master cleanse" whatever you call it you will be happy you did it. The lemon juice cleanse consists of 6 to 12 glasses a day of: juice of 1/2 a lemon(from real lemons), 2 tbsp maple syrup, 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper (or less, to the taste), 8 oz water(good clean water)

    2

This protocol can be used for up to ten days, though most get good result with only 3 or 4 days. It is important to listen to your body while cleansing.

Food isn't consumed during the cleanse; instead, a glass of the "lemonade" mixture is consumed whenever hungry also make sure you are drinking plenty good clean water, this is very important as you need a lot of water to create an easy pathway push out the toxins.

The fist day you probably won't see many results if any but the second and third days will show signs of releasing toxins, you will have to use bathroom a lot so be warned don't plan on being places where you don't have quick access to a bathroom. Not only will you feel lighter but you will have a lot more energy.

    3

Once you stop the cleanse and start eating again it is very important to only eat foods that are easy to digest. Do not eat dairy products, processed sugars or red meats for at least a week after(if at all) going from no food to something that is hard to digest can shock your system. So stick with fruits and vegetables for the first two days after the cleanses then move on to nuts, fish and eggs.

Remember listen to your body if at any point you feel uncomfortable stop the cleanse and always drink lots of good clean water.

    Good luck and happy cleansing

Hypothyroid: Foods to Avoid

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, or when the body does not effectively use this hormone. People with a hypothyroid condition may want to avoid foods that can interfere with thyroid function.

Beverages

People with low thyroid function should avoid consuming alcohol and caffeinated drinks, including coffee, tea and colas.

Vegetables

Numerous vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables, may suppress thyroid function. These include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, lima beans, mustard greens, radishes, spinach, sweet potatoes and turnips.

Other Foods

Other foods that may inhibit thyroid function include linseed, cassava, millet, peaches, pears, peanuts, pine nuts and soybeans. Red meat should also be limited, as well as processed meats such as sausage and lunch meat.

Food Sensitivities

Certain foods that commonly cause sensitivities also can interfere with thyroid function. These include corn, dairy products and wheat.

Trans-Fatty Acids

Other substances a person with a hypothyroid condition should avoid include trans-fatty acids, such as margarine, and chemical food additives and preservatives.

How to Make a Homemade Detox Drink

Detoxification is the process of eliminating and stabilizing toxins in the body. Toxins are derived from foods, medications, beverages and even the air we breathe. By detoxifying the body, you can rid your digestive tract, respiratory system, colon, and skin of these damaging toxins. You can detoxify your body in several ways--capsules, a fruit and vegetable diet, and beverages. Detoxification beverages are among the most common way to rid the body of toxins, and can be made in the convenience of your own home.

Instructions

The Power of Cranberries

    1

Measure 1 cup of spring water, and 2 tbsp. of unsweetened cranberry juice into a glass. Cranberry juice cleanses the urinary tract, flushes toxins from the body and assists in the elimination of store fat cells.

    2

Measure 1 tsp. of barley green powder into the cranberry juice and water. Stir ingredients for about two minutes. Barley green powder is gentle on the digestive tract and allows essential vitamins and nutrients to be absorbed by the body.

    3

Consume beverage two times daily--morning and night--for best results.

Sweet Apple Cider Detoxification

    4

Boil 2 cups of water in a pot on the stove. Once it comes to a boil, remove the pot from the burner, and let cool for five minutes.

    5

Pour the hot water into a glass. Measure 2 tbsp. honey and add it to the glass of water. Stir honey and water for three minutes.

    6

Measure 2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar and pour it into the glass containing the water and honey. Stir once more to blend all of the ingredients. Apple cider vinegar contains vitamins, such as potassium, magnesium and calcium, that are necessary to rid the body of harmful toxins and chemicals. Apple cider can dissolve harmful toxins, such as uric acid, which is chronically associated with muscle and join pain.

    7

Consume this apple cider detoxification beverage twice daily--morning and night.

Vanilla Blueberry Yogurt Cleansing

    8

Measure 2 1/2 cups of vanilla yogurt and 1 cup of milk into a blender. If you prefer plain yogurt, you can use that instead.

    9

Measure 1/2 cup of blueberries and add them to ingredients in blender. Blueberries are a natural antioxidant that can help fight free radicals. Free radicals damage cell membranes and are associated with the aging process.

    10

Place the lid on the blender and blend the milk, yogurt and blueberries on a low speed for 15 seconds. This will help blend the ingredients and allow room inside blender to add the ice cubes.

    11

Add six to eight ice cubes and blend all of the ingredients on a high setting until the ice is crushed.

    12

Consume beverage as often as desired.

List of Easily Digestible Foods

List of Easily Digestible Foods

Whether you have been diagnosed with a digestive disorder or simply have a cranky digestive system, knowing which foods are easiest to digest can be beneficial to your digestive tract and physical/emotional well-being. Most foods considered easy to digest vary from one person to the next due to individual sensitivities. The following is a list of foods easily digested by the majority; not necessarily inclusive of individuals who experience digestive issues.

Naturally Fibrous Foods (Carbohydrates)

Fiber stimulates the process of digestion. While adding fiber in the form of powders, pills or shakes may help with constipation, it may also generate cramping, bloating and excessive gas. Increasing your intake of naturally fibrous foods can help eliminate the need for fiber supplementation.

Most fruits and vegetables are easy to digest when eaten raw as they contain enzymes necessary for digestion. Individuals who eat processed, canned or stored food usually have low levels of digestive enzymes. Cooking destroys enzymes; therefore, fruits and vegetables are most beneficial when eaten raw. Some fruits high in acid, such as apples, may cause stomach cramping and can be improved by cooking. Additionally, corn may present problems and need to be avoided by some individuals.

Whole grains, sprouted grains, beans, peas and lentils are naturally fibrous foods easy to digest. Digestion of dried beans, peas and lentils can be significantly improved by soaking for eight to 12 hours in water, prior to cooking.

Fermented Foods

Foods that have been fermented make the digestive system say, Yes! Fermented foods contain beneficial bacteria that helps balance the good/bad bacteria of the digestive tract and perform some of the digestion for you. These foods include sauerkraut, yogurt and other cultured dairy products.

Other Sources of Carbohydrates

Rice is typically easy for most people to digest and includes all varieties: white, brown, whole grain, basmati, rice pasta, cakes and crackers. Other sources of carbohydrates that are easy to digest include oatmeal, quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth and millet.

Protein

Fish is a high-quality protein that is also rich in omega 3 fatty acids and easy to digest. Chicken that has been roasted, baked, broiled or poached also provides a significant source of protein.

Nuts and seeds are often mistakenly considered to cause digestive problems. While this is typically true for individuals who suffer from digestive issues and disorders, most people can obtain significant amounts of dietary protein from nuts, seeds and peanut butter.

What Could Cause Rapid Weight Loss in Dogs?

Weight loss in dogs is normal as they age, however rapid weight loss is a sign that your dog is in need of some medical attention. What could cause rapid weight loss in dogs?

Theories/Speculation

Rapid weight loss in dogs could stem from a number of causes. First, you will have to observe the dog closely if you want to help. You will need to start looking for signs of intestinal parasites called worms. Your dog can pick worms up from eating something it is not suppose to. For example, another animal's stool. Signs to watch for--vomiting. Observe the dog's stool for worms or pieces of a tapeworm. Diarrhea. If you find these signs, then a trip to the pet medications section at your local store may help or you can consult with your regular veterinarian for the best course of action. If after observing your dog and there are no signs of worms, then there may be something wrong with your dog's digestive system.

Identification

If you do not see any sign that your dog has worms or tapeworm, then you need to identify his daily behavior in order to inform your veterinarian. Mainly, watch your dog's appetite. Take notice of excessive flatulence, a rumbly tummy, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, bad breath and tumors. These are symptoms of digestive system issues that would help your veterinarian determine where to start in helping solve your dog's rapid weight loss.

Effects

The effects of a digestive system problem can cause rapid weight loss. A simple digestive system problem can easily turn into a major issue if you do not take action. Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas starts to decrease the number of digestive enzymes to digest the food. Your dog may lose appetite. Your dog may start suffering from sugar diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus).

Prevention/Solution

Providing your dog with plenty of fresh water and high quality dog food will prevent future digestive problems. Make sure your dog has the regular visits to the vet for routine check ups. And always be sure your dog has a clean environment.

Benefits

The benefits of solving your dog's rapid weight loss could mean a longer life for your pet and more memorable moments for you, your dog and your family.

Diets for People With Hypothyroidism

Diets for People With Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is the condition when the thyroid gland does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. There are a number of possible causes of this, including iodine deficiency (a common cause in developing countries); "Hashimoto's thyroiditis", which is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland is attacked by T-cells; postpartum thyroiditis, a condition in women who have recently given birth; and genetics. While treatment hypothyroidism depends on the severity of the condition, there is much debate that a specific diet can help improve the function of the thyroid gland.

Mary Shomon's "Thyroid Diet"

One of the most well-known voices in the United States on the specific topic of thyroid health, hypothyroidism in particular, is not a doctor but author and patient advocate Mary Shomon. Ms. Shomon has written a number of books on the topic, including the New York Times bestseller "The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss," and has long fought the notion that the information and advice given to patients with thyroid conditions by doctors is typically misleading and often flat out wrong. In 1995 Ms. Shomon was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and was given what she feels was useless and damaging information by her doctors in treating her condition. Over the years she developed a plan that led to how she successfully manages her condition and gives advice to all different kinds of thyroid conditions.

She describes her "Thyroid Diet" as a low-glycemic (low sugar), good fat, and good-carb. Vegetables and fruits high in fiber such as broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, apples bananas, and pears are an important element to the diet for hypothyroidism, but warns not to eat vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage raw because they are goitrogenic (which is a quality that may aggravate hypothyroidism by enlarging the thyroid gland but can be diffused by cooking foods that have this characteristic). As for good carbs, she recommends one or two servings a day of starchy carbs like cereal with high fiber or a bran muffin. Good fats include those found in fish oils, fatty acids, olive oil and avocados. Trans fats and saturated fats should be avoided altogether. The diet is designed to be complemented by exercise and a variety of supplements including thyromine, iodine, vitamin B, and vitamin C.

The Hypothyroidism Diet Myth

Dr. Todd Nippoldt, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, is symbolic of the experts that Mary Shomon has targeted.

According to Dr. Nippoldt, there is no diet that can help improve the function of the thyroid. Dr. Nippoldt also believes that the avoidance of specific foods will not help improve the function of the thyroid. However, Dr. Nippoldt believes that the absorption of the synthetic thyroid hormone taken as a treatment for hypothyroidism can be affected by consuming too much fiber. He also believes that other foods and supplements can have the same negative impact on synthetic thyroid hormone absorption, including cottonseed meal, walnuts, soybean flour, calcium supplements, antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, and iron supplements. In addition, he also believes that certain medications like sucralfate used to treat ulcers and cholestyramine and colestipol used for the treatment of high cholesterol can have the same negative effect.

Diet Plan for Boxers

Boxing is a sport of endurance, speed, quickness and strength. Just as in most sports, the better shape you are in, the better chance you have to excel. Diet has always been considered a critical part of boxing, a concept Sylvester Stallone helped make famous by drinking a raw egg in the movie "Rocky." While raw egg is no longer considered a healthy choice, the protein it provides is an integral part of the boxing diet.

Pack on Protein

Protein is considered the building block of muscle, and while boxers aren't bodybuilders, it doesn't hurt to be rock hard when entering the ring. Protein also goes a long way when it comes to assisting recovery after an intense training session. Chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, tuna and yes, eggs, are all good sources of protein. Boxers should consume at least two to three servings of protein a day, with each serving being the size of your fist.

No Counting Carbs

Many diet plans insist that carbohydrates of any sort are bad, but such is not the case for boxers. In fact, it has been said that boxers in training should receive anywhere from 40 to 55 percent of their calories from carbs--an essential part of energy needed for a fight. Of course, the key is to eat the right types of carbs, avoiding flour-enriched foods, such as white bread, crackers, sugary cereals or some instances, pasta. Instead, a boxer should get his carbs from fruits, beans and according to some experts, oatmeal.

Drink Up

Water is an important part of anyone's diet, especially an athlete, as water provides most of the day's essential vitamins and minerals. Boxers should drink eight to 10 8 oz. glasses a day to help improve circulation and flexibility, and to stay hydrated. They should drink even more on the day of a bout, consuming as many as 14 glasses.

Meal Plan

Boxers should eat five or six smaller meals throughout the day, as opposed to two or three large meals. At least three of the meals should consist of one protein and one carbohydrate. For instance, breakfast may consist of a serving of egg whites with a side of fruit (apple, orange and banana). That could be followed by a low-fat, low-sugar protein shake for a snack, followed by a broiled or chicken breast and broccoli for lunch. Another protein shake could follow for a snack, with salmon and salad for dinner. Following this plan, a boxer would want to eat another serving of fruit, or other healthy carb, before going to bed.

Fight Night Diet

Experts recommend boxers avoid starchy foods on the day of the fight. This means no vegetables or beans. Instead, most of the calories should come from protein sources and "lighter" carbs found in fruit. The latter are easier to digest and keep a boxer feeling energetic.

The Best Diet for Hyperthyroid

Hyperthyroidism is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive. When too much thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid gland, it is toxic, therefore, this condition is also known as thyrotoxicosis. Hyperthyroidism is best treated with anti-thyroid drug.

Thyroid Hormones

Thyroid hormones control the rate at which the cells burn fat and metabolize. Excessive thyroid hormones can cause weight loss. Other symptoms include increased heart rate, hyperactivity and frequent bowel movements, which can cause further weight loss.

Hyperthyroidism and Diet

Your diet doesn't have much of an effect on hyperthyroidism. However, it can help with the common symptom of weight loss that people with hyperthyroidism experience. Try increasing the amount of calories you consume daily until you reach a healthy weight. This can include a lot of lean meats, carbohydrates, and healthy fats such as nuts, cheese, and dark chocolate.

A part of your diet that can lead to hyperthyroidism is excessive iodine intake. This is usually only an issue in people who are prone to thyroid gland imbalance. Large quantities of table salt or shellfish contain excessive iodine. The heart disease medication, Cordarone, also contains a lot of iodine.

If you have hyperthyroidism avoid including table salt, seafood, eggs, dairy, and iodine-rich plants in your diet.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism

Excessive iodine intake is only one possible cause of hyperthyroidism. Grave's disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to make antibodies. The antibodies attach themselves to the thyroid gland, causing it to release excess thyroid hormones. Other causes, such as inflammation of the thyroid gland or a nodule of it are possible, but not as common as Grave's disease.

Foods That Increase Stomach Acid

Acid reflux and heartburn are never fun to live with. Other than taking medications, there are additional measures people can take to avoid increased stomach acid. One of the best ways to keep stomach acid down is to avoid foods that increase stomach acid. This one step can help reduce and sometimes even eliminate the pain associated with acid reflux and heartburn.

Tomatoes and Tomato-Based Foods

Obviously, tomatoes are high in acidity, which means they increase stomach acid. What isn't so obvious is the number of foods that are tomato-based. For example, take a look at the ingredients on a can of beef stew and more than likely it will list either tomato sauce or tomato paste. Tomato sauce and tomato paste are very common because these add rich flavor to soups and stews. Also, keep an eye on condiments, such as barbecue and steak sauces.

Citrus Fruits

Oranges, pineapples and other citrus fruits can greatly increase stomach acid. The same goes for fruit juices and sodas that have citrus fruit in them. The good thing is some brands now offer low acidic varieties of orange juice.

Foods and Drinks Containing Caffeine

The Mayo Clinic recommends people with acid reflux to cut back on caffeine. This not only means coffee, tea and sodas, but it also means chocolate and foods containing chocolate. The reason caffeine causes such a problem is that it weakens the sphincter muscle, which makes it easier for acid to make its way up the esophagus. For some drinks, you can purchase decaffeinated versions, just be aware that this doesn't work for all drinks. Coffee, for example, is so high in acid that it doesn't matter if a decaffeinated version is consumed.

High-Fat Foods

According to the website MedHelp, high-fat foods should be avoided. High fat foods take longer for the stomach to break down, which means they stay in the stomach longer. As more food is consumed, it builds on top of the undigested high-fat food and makes it easier for acid to build up.

Peppermint and Spearmint

According to a story featured on Fox News, mint has a myth of soothing stomach acid. Actually, it's quite the opposite. Peppermint and spearmint are actually to be avoided because they can increase stomach acid. In the story featured on Fox News, nutritionist Tanya Zuckerbrot recommends using licorice instead of mint to help sooth stomach troubles.

How to Detox With Vinegar

How to Detox With Vinegar

Vinegar is one of the oldest traditional folk remedies to be found in many cultures. First discovered as a food and medicine in Babylonia (c. 5000 BC), vinegar is gaining support in modern science for its effect in stimulating liver function and detoxification. In a study published in "The British Journal of Nutrition" in 2005, researcher Takashi Fushimi and colleagues found vinegar improved serum cholesterol and triglycerides by stimulating the action of the liver and promoting removal of fats from the body.

Instructions

    1

Drink between 30 ml to 50 ml of vinegar daily and continue for four weeks. Vinegar can be added a glass of water before a meal or upon rising in the morning. For the purposes of a detox you can use either oat vinegar, rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. These vinegars contain approximately 5 percent to 7 percent of acetic acid, the active medicinal ingredient in vinegar. Many types of vinegar also contain significant amounts of antioxidant polyphenols, in particular red wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar.

    2

Add 10 ml of vinegar to a glass of hot water to relieve digestive discomfort, bloating or headaches caused by the detoxification. In the first week of a detox these symptoms may arise in response to increasing amounts of toxins leaving the body via the liver. Rice vinegar in hot water is a traditional Chinese remedy to give immediate relief for cramps, indigestion and headaches and can be taken as needed till symptoms subside.

    3

Add vinegar to meats during cooking. According to Henry Lu, author of "Chinese System of Food Cures," the addition of vinegar to meats supports the digestion and assimilation of foods and also increases appetite. Henry Lu states vinegar has a direct effect upon the stomach and liver and can be used to treat food poisoning, jaundice, hepatitis, parasites, poor digestion and infections.

    4

Add vinegar to salads as a dressing. A common dressing for salads is balsamic vinegar, which is made from white trebbiano grapes from Italy and is rich in acetic acid and antioxidants. Throughout the year you can include vinegar in the daily diet to help maintain appetite, digestion and detoxification.

Lemon Detox Cleanse

Made popular primarily by celebrity Beyonce Knowles, the lemon detox cleanse diet is one of the latest fad diets to gain in popularity. Also known as the lemonade diet, the lemon detox cleanse is essentially a 10-day fasting program, aided by an unusual lemony concoction.

How to Follow the Lemon Detox Cleanse

For 10 days, you may eat no solid food. However, what you may have is up to 10 tall glasses of lemon juice "cocktail" containing purified water, organic lemon juice, cayenne pepper and organic grade B maple syrup. But that's not all; you do get to drink saltwater in the morning and a laxative tea at night.
Part of an extreme detoxifying diet called the Master Cleanse; this program began over 60 years ago. Invented by nutritionist Stanley Burroughs, who wrote the book, "The Master Cleanser" back in 1976, the lemon detox cleanse has gained a new generation of followers who are buying his book and trying it out for themselves.

Celebrity Testimonials

Although the taste of the cocktail may be barely palatable, musician/actress Beyonce Knowles appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007, singing the praises of this lemony cleansing plan. Beyonce said that weight loss was her motivation for trying the program. She told the world that she successfully dropped 20 pounds using the lemon detox cleanse, to prepare herself for her starring role in "Dreamgirls."
In fact, it seems that Beyonce has become a major spokesperson for this diet, if you visit the main United States website promoting it. Beyonce is featured on this website promoting a specific type of maple syrup to use in making the lemon detox cleanse.
Another celebrity who has spoken out about her success with the lemon detox cleanse is Robin Quivers, the sidekick of Howard Stern. Quivers told People Magazine that she dropped a total of 73 pounds on the lemon detox cleanse, and also said that the diet helped combat fatigue and alleviate joint pain to boot.

Helpful Tips

It is recommended that two days prior to beginning the cleanse, to begin the colon cleansing saltwater treatment. One teaspoon of sea salt should be added to a 24-ounce, warm glass of purified water. This saltwater solution may be drank once in the morning and once in the evening. Be aware that beginning this saltwater cleanse may cause frequent bowel movements, as it is designed to begin the colon cleansing process.

After beginning the lemon drink, continue drinking the above saltwater drink a minimum of once daily. If you have never been on a fast before, it may be a good idea to only conduct the cleanse for 3 days, the first time you do it. While not a long-term weight loss program, the lemon detox cleanse may be conducted several times a year; perhaps once every season. Although you may experience rapid weight loss on the lemon detox cleanse, keep in mind that it is primarily intended for detoxification purposes.

According to Lemon Detox.com, the acidity of the lemon juice acts like an "internal detergent," to dissolve excess fats and the cayenne helps speed up metabolism, thus "promoting circulation and the elimination of toxins." They say that the drink provides enough nutrition to support the body's "alert functioning" and is "assimilated directly into the bloodstream."

Vinegar & Epsom Salt Detox

Your body is a chemical wonder, filled with hormone interactions, energy creation and consumption as well as purification. When we consume foods that are difficult to process, our livers work overtime and might need the help of a detox on occasion. Vinegar and Epsom salts have been used for centuries as healing methods and are great sources of detoxification.

Epsom Salt Bath

Many people have used Epsom salts for years to relieve aches and pains--primarily caused by uric acid build up in muscles. By adding one to two cups of Epsom salts to a hot bath and soaking for 20 minutes, tired feet and back aches find great relief. You don't need to be filled with aches and pains to benefit from an Epsom salt detox bath.

If you are soaking in an Epsom salt bath for more than 20 minutes, you might become very tired--even exhausted--as your body is working to release metals, minerals and toxins not needed. The bath might become quite murky as result of what is being released. This should subside as you do the detox more frequently. Adding ginger, baking soda or sesame oil can help reduce pain, counter radiation effects and improve skin health.

Vinegar Bath

If your body is too acidic, you might develop skin conditions such as acne, eczema or rashes. You can use vinegar to soothe these conditions and restore your skin's pH balance to a more alkaline state. Apple cider vinegar is the most popular vinegar used, but you can experience excellent results from white vinegar as well. Add one cup to two quarts of vinegar to a hot bath. This will also alleviate pain from arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and gout by also helping eliminate excess uric acid.

Vinegar as Dietary Aid

Consuming vinegar is another way to aid in a total body detox. Many people will consume a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar before a meal to help the digestive process. Others will make a tea with honey and herbs. You can also use apple cider vinegar in cooking with salad dressings, marinades and pickling spices. The vinegar helps maintain proper pH levels in the stomach and digestive tract.

Side Effects

When you detox, your body first must release toxins that are stored in your fat cells. As it does this, the toxins within your body will make you feel worse than you did before starting a detox--especially if you have never done one before or don't do them regularly. You might feel as if you are coming down with the flu. This is common, but know that continuing with the baths will help your body eliminate the toxins quicker.

Vinegar, Epsom Salts and Diet

Although you will benefit from using detox baths and adding vinegar as a supplement, you will greatly improve your results if you limit your diet during the detox period to organic foods, primarily fresh fruits and vegetables along with at least two liters of water each day. Try not to consume caffeine, nicotine or alcohol when detoxing to help your body really flush toxins out. By doing this, you will increase your energy and improve your metabolism.

Foods to Eat With Acid Reflux

A change in your diet and habits can decrease or stop acid reflux. Try eating smaller meals, eat a snack between meals and avoid foods that trigger heartburn. Changing your diet doesn't mean you have to eat bland food. There are many foods to choose from that taste good and are healthful too. Heartburn that isn't relieved by diet may need medication in addition to diet changes.

Fruits

Apples and bananas are great choices for a snack because they help soak up excess acid in the stomach. Other fruits you can eat for acid reflux include melons, peaches and pears.

Grains

Grains such as whole-wheat bread, crackers made from grain, and grain cereals are high in fiber to aid digestion and neutralize acid in the stomach. Brown or white rice are great acid neutralizers. Other grain products include rice cakes, pretzels with no seasoning, and corn products.

Meats

To avoid heartburn eat lean or extra-lean ground beef. Instead of frying fish, baking or grilling are the most healthful options. Chicken should be skinless, and chicken breast rather than dark meat is a good choice. Meats including turkey and London broil are easy on acid reflux.

Vegetables

Vegetables also contain fiber, which is good for soaking up excess stomach acids. Steamed vegetables such as carrots, spinach and broccoli are nutritious. Choose boiled or baked potatoes over fried and mashed potatoes. Foods you can eat that are good heartburn-stoppers are peas, green beans, celery and lettuce.

Beverages

Drink skim, low-fat or fat-free milk instead of whole milk, which can aggravate your stomach. Drink plenty of water every day to keep acid reflux in check. Calm stomach acid with a cup of herbal tea. Black tea has a high acid content and should be avoided.

Dairy

Eating low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese is good for neutralizing acid reflux symptoms. Cheese such as feta, goat and soy cheese are healthful options. Fat-free cream cheese and fat-free sour cream allow you to enjoy food without the heartburn.

Other

When choosing soups, reach for ones with a vegetable or chicken broth base. Reach for ices or sorbet over ice cream. The best condiments include Italian dressing and low-fat dressing. To satisfy your sweet tooth reach for low-fat or fat-free sweets; baked chips and cookies. Lentils and beans are high in protein and fiber.

The Best Weight Losing Detox

There are many detox diet plans on the market offering quick ways to drop excess weight. While weight lost on a detox is often only temporary, fasts or cleanses are a beneficial way to reduce waste buildup in the body while renewing energy and concentration levels.

Detox diets help to reduce the presence in the body of cancer-causing free radicals and toxins, which accumulate as a result of poor diet and exposure to pollution.

Fruit

Fruit is a valuable source of vitamins and antioxidants for those on a detox diet. Strawberries and cherries are high in antioxidants that counteract harmful free radicals, and they also boost energy and concentration levels. Grapes are beneficial to the heart since they contain flavinols, which help the blood pump through the body more efficiently and help the arteries to remain strong.

Citrus fruits such as oranges contain high levels of Vitamin C, which work to detox the liver. Cranberries are popular in detox diets because they contain proanthocyanidin antioxidants that help cleanse the kidneys.

Eating many servings of fruits on a detox diet will ensure you are getting vitamins and antioxidants for nutrition while you also lose weight.

Water

Drinking water is vital to everyday life. During a detox, not only will it help to flush the system of toxins but it can also reduce hunger. Drink at least two liters of ice water each day, so that the body must increase its metabolism to heat the water internally. Adding 1 tablespoon of pure lemon juice will also help cleanse the liver.

Water also helps reduce fat in the body by assisting the kidneys in flushing out excess waste. Without water, the kidney needs the liver to help it flush the system, making both organs slow down and decreasing their fat-burning energy.

Fiber

Fiber is one of the most important features of any detox diet. It helps to cleanse the colon and bowels of buildup, leaving you feeling lighter and with better digestion. Be sure to get at least 25 grams of fiber each day through a variety of foods such as brown rice, quinoa, apples and potatoes.

You may also take a fiber supplement if you do not get enough through your food. A natural option is psyllium husk. It works as a laxative, providing bulk to push out waste from the intestines and colon. Take one serving three times daily for the course of the detox for best results. Be sure to drink plenty of water while taking any kind of fiber to prevent constipation.

What Is the Maple Syrup, Lemon & Water Diet?

What Is the Maple Syrup, Lemon & Water Diet?

Lemon juice, maple syrup and water are the main components of a detoxification diet called the Master Cleanse. This short-term diet is designed to flush out the intestinal tract.

Features

The Master Cleanse is a detoxifying diet created by Stanley Burroughs. It involves a three-day "ease in" period, followed by a 10-day liquid diet of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It ends with a three-day "ease out" from the fast.

Purpose

The lemonade diet is designed to cleanse the intestinal tract. Maple syrup provides calories while the other ingredients are meant to flush toxins from the body. Diet followers are told to drink a glass of the lemonade recipe every time they are hungry or have the urge to eat during the fast. Drinking water throughout the day assists in the overall cleansing of the intestines.

Warnings

Nutrition experts have criticized the Master Cleanse. Kathleen Zelman, a former spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, writes on WebMD that the Master Cleanse is a short-term solution to weight loss and depletes the body of essential nutrients and energy for the duration of the fast.

Signs & Symptoms of Hypothyroidism: Salt Craving

Signs & Symptoms of Hypothyroidism: Salt Craving

While a craving for salt can be indicative of a variety of physical disorders, it is an especially recurrent symptom among those suffering from hypothyroidism, also known as an under-active or low thyroid.

Definition

The Mayo Clinic defines hypothyroidism as a condition that disrupts the bodys chemical equilibrium when the thyroid fails to maintain necessary hormones.

Why The Salt Craving Helps

Hypothyroidism negatively affects the bodys ability to absorb both sodium and magnesium, according to Dr. Ray Peat, a contributor to Thyroid Info online. A craving for salt is the bodys cue that it wants more. When we respond, the consumption of additional sodium increases the production of the hormone aldosterone.

The Role of Aldosterone

Aldosterone helps to regulate sodium levels in the body and it curtails the loss of magnesium. Magnesium makes the bodys cells more receptive to hormones produced by the thyroid.

Related Symptoms

When low levels of aldosterone cue the kidneys to excrete salt, this causes an increase in urination, excessive perspiring and thirst. When the kidneys fail to retain necessary levels of sodium, low blood pressure results, causing dizziness and lightheadedness. The body will struggle to maintain levels of sodium and when it is unable to do so, significant fatigue may occur.

Recommendations

Adding salt to the diet is recommended. Sea salt has proved especially beneficial because it contains trace minerals that ordinary table salt does not.

Foods Not to Eat With Hypothyroid

Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones. The thyroid, located in the neck below the larynx, produces hormones that control metabolism. Hypothyroidism is typically found in women past the age of 50. When you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, changes in your diet can help the absorption of thyroid medicine.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hypothyroidism are depression, fatigue, constipation, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, thinning hair, brittle nails, slow speech, thickness of skin and a decreased sense of taste and smell.

Treatment

The most commonly prescribed treatment for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine, a thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Once prescribed, this becomes a lifelong treatment. Even as symptoms go away, Levothyroxine must be taken.

Diet

According to MayoClinic.com, there is no hypothyroidism diet but certain foods and supplements should be avoided to ensure they don't conflict with the body's absorption of levothyroxine. Walnuts, soy products, high-fiber foods, and iron and calcium supplements should not be consumed within four hours before or after taking a dosage of levothyroxine. The thyroid replacement drug works best on an empty stomach.

Always discuss diet and treatment options with your doctor.

How to Make Lemon Maple Syrup for A Detox Diet

How to Make Lemon Maple Syrup for A Detox Diet

A detox cleansing diet consists of consuming nothing but liquids for a certain amount of time in order to spur quick weight loss. These diets can vary in the types of ingredients that make up the concoction, how many times to imbibe in a day and duration. The lemon maple syrup of the title refers to the master cleanse detox. It's a drink made with four ingredients.

Instructions

How to Make Lemon Maple Syrup for A Detox Diet

    1

Assemble your four ingredients for the detox diet and get out a pitcher.

    2

Squeeze two tablespoons of lemon juice into your container. Use the real juice of an organically grown lemon. Do not use bottled juice.

    3
    Cayenne pepper

Add one-tenth of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. This is approximately a quick dash. If you don't like drinking juices with an extra kick, you can leave the cayenne pepper out of the recipe and instead buy cayenne pepper capsules from a health foods store.

    4
    Maple syrup from a tree

Pour in the two tablespoons of maple syrup. In order for this concoction to be most effective, use authentic maple syrup. To top off the detox diet juice, add the water.

    5

Using the stirring spoon, blend well. This makes one serving. Simply double and triple the amounts of the ingredients to make a larger batch of the cayenne, maple syrup and lemon cleanse.

The Best Diets for Women With PCOS

The Best Diets for Women With PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal disorder that affects between 5 and 8 percent of women in the United States, according to Dr. Geoffrey Redmond, MD, at the Hormone Help Center. The myriad symptoms of PCOS include acne, oily skin, increased growth of facial and body hair, loss of scalp hair, irregular periods, infertility, insulin resistance, weight gain and depression. Women with PCOS should follow current dietary recommendations, says registered dietitian Martha McKittrick, RD, CDE, on the OBGYN website. Untreated PCOS may lead to increased risk of endometrial cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Low Glycemic Carbohydrates

When eating food the pancreas releases insulin, which enables conversion of sugar for energy or for fat storage. Many women with PCOS experience insulin resistance, says McKittrick, and this can trigger unpleasant symptoms, such as sugar cravings and weight gain. Since high intakes of carbohydrates may cause elevated insulin levels, McKittrick suggests "starting with a diet that is 40 percent carbohydrates and work[ing] your way downward if need be." Reduced cravings, increased energy levels and regular periods are some indicators of successful management of insulin levels. McKittrick recommends eating low glycemic carbohydrates, such as whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, beans, fruits and vegetables.

Plant-Based Foods

Angela Grassi at the PCOS Nutrition Center explains that women with PCOS have "a higher rate of cardiovascular risk factors," such as elevated levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol. Grassi suggests that a diet for PCOS should consist mainly of plant-based foods since they contain vitamins, minerals and fiber that help to reduce blood lipid levels, blood pressure and insulin. Plant-based foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. They contain fewer calories than animal produce and require lengthier amounts of chewing, which adds fullness to meals and prevents weight gain, says Grassi.

Heart-Healthy Fats

Grassi recommends that women with PCOS follow a diet that is "limited in animal products, many of which contain saturated fats and cholesterol that are known to clog arteries (butter, margarine, cream, red meat and mayonnaise)." A diet for PCOS should consist of heart-healthy fats that help to lower cholesterol levels .These include monounsaturated fats, from foods such as olive oil, canola oil and nuts, and omega-3 fatty acids from almonds, walnuts, egg yolk, flaxseed and oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel.

Dietary Supplements

On The Natural Health Website for Women, Dr. Marilyn Glenville recommends that women with PCOS take a multivitamin and mineral supplement to ensure sufficient intake of all essential nutrients. She particularly recommends chromium as a supplement to assist the formation of glucose tolerance factor, which reduces feelings of hunger and helps control food cravings. She also recommends vitamin B for effective thyroid function, which is necessary for weight control. Zinc is another important supplement that she suggests for women with PCOS because zinc deficiency may cause loss of taste and smell and create a need for stronger tasting foods, such as high-calorie fatty, sugary and salty foods. In addition, Glenville recommends magnesium supplements for insulin efficiency and supplements of coenzyme 10 to help control blood sugar levels.

The Best Way to Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism

Having an underactive thyroid--hypothyroidism--can make it difficult for you to lose weight, even when you limit your daily calories. However, you can still achieve your weight-loss goals while meeting your body's nutritional needs.

Don't Diet Excessively

If you have and underactive thyroid and diet to excess--cutting out too many calories or nutrients--you may find that you won't lose the weight you want. You either will stay at your current weight or you will gain additional weight. This happens because your hypothyroidism has already slowed your metabolism. When you begin a diet and decrease your caloric intake, your body responds by slowing its metabolism further, thus defeating your good intentions.

You can still reduce your caloric intake and lose weight, but you have to reduce your calories by a smaller amount and lose weight more slowly. Consider breaking your meals into six smaller meals throughout the day instead of the three larger meals. Begin by making sure your daily intake of protein is no more than 40 percent of your total calories, your fat intake is no higher than 25 percent and your consumption of low-glycemic carbohydrates is 35 percent. Incorporate fresh vegetables into your daily food intake, but avoid broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, soy, millet, pine nuts and peanuts. These foods are "goitrogenic," meaning they can interfere with your body's ability to absorb iodine, which the thyroid uses in regulating metabolism. Vegetables may lose this effect if they have been cooked, so if you cook them before eating them, you can have limited amounts to provide nutrients your body needs.

Nutritional Supplements with Iodine

If your body's iodine levels are low, you can take a nutritional supplement that contains iodine. Discuss the possibility of taking this supplement with your doctor. If your doctor has already prescribed a thyroid hormone replacement, check to make sure an iodine supplement won't counteract the hormone's effects.

Incorporate Iodine-Rich Food Into Your Diet

Your body normally stores 20 to 30 milligrams of iodine, mostly in your thyroid gland, but also in your stomach, salivary glands and in your blood. If your iodine stores are low, your body will not be able to make enough thyroid hormone. Iodine-rich food can help boost your levels. These include foods grown in soil rich in iodine, yogurt, cow's milk, seafood and seaweed (gamet, balbalugang, lato, nori and kelp). Incorporate these foods into your diet to help your thyroid function return to normal.

Diet to Stop Diarrhea

Mild cases of diarrhea generally don't require medication. Avoiding specific trigger foods and eating a bland diet will help your system return to normal. But what is most essential is to drink lots of fluids so you don't become dehydrated.

Diet

The BRAT diet works well for all ages. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast are mild "binders," and they can be added to your regular diet. Some doctors also say to add plain yogurt to the list.
Foods to avoid include milk products, fried foods, fatty meats, cookies, chocolate, spicy foods and citrus fruits.

Fluids

Clean tap or bottled water, orange juice, tea and white grape juice will keep you hydrated.
Avoid juices rich in high fructose content such as pear, plum, cherry, apple or mango. Also avoid milk, soda, coffee, alcohol and other energy drinks, as they may aggravate dehydration and diarrhea.

Prevention

Always wash your hands after using the restroom and before you eat. Never leave food out room temperature. Eat only pasteurized dairy products. Don't swim in contaminated lakes or pools.
When traveling to underdeveloped countries, avoid tap water, ice, dairy products, shellfish and fish, undercooked meat, vegetables and fruit that cannot be peeled. When you brush your teeth, use bottled water.

Tips

Avoid all milk and dairy products for at least seven to 10 days after your diarrhea ends.
Ease back into your normal diet by adding easily digestible, high-carbohydrate foods like plain rice, boiled potatoes, toast and crackers.

Konjac Flour Side Effects

Konjac flour is used in powder form as a weight-loss supplement. The flour comes from the Konjac plant, which is native to Asia and especially common in Japan and Indonesia. The powder is largely comprised of the carbohydrate Glucomannan, according to the site FibraSlim.com. The side effects that arise from consuming Konjac flour are caused by the Glucomannan.

Bloating and Gas

Glucomannan is a fiber that is soluble in water, which means it readily dissolves once it reaches the stomach and intestines. Bacteria in the intestines cause the fiber to ferment, leading to bloating and gas. These symptoms are often accompanied by stomach aches and pains, a swollen abdominal area and the need to pass the gas. This side effect also results in a feeling of fullness, which may be one reason it works as a weight-loss supplement as the person who consumes it may not experience any hunger.

Bathroom Breaks

Glucomannan is a diuretic, which means it flushes the body of toxins through frequent urination. Those who consume the substance may want to stay close to a bathroom, both for Glucomannans diuretic properties and its penchant for causing diarrhea. The diarrhea will usually be mild, according to the site FibraSlim.com, but still a factor when consuming Glucomannan.

Choking

Konjac flour is often consumed in the form of a tablet. The Glucomannan in the flour is very effective at absorbing liquid and expanding. Those with throat problems or issues with the esophagus are at risk of having the tablet expand in their throats, causing it to get stuck and leading to choking.

Allergic Reactions

Those who are allergic to Glucomannan may have a host of other side effects from consuming the flour. These may include rashes or other skin conditions, chest congestion or pain, and congestion in the throat.

Other Warnings

The Glucomannan in Konjac flour, which can cause disruptions in the digestive system, may cause even greater damage if taken as a long-term weight loss solution, according to DietSpotlight.com. The site also notes Konjac flour is banned in Australia and has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Homemade Detox Salt Water for Weight Loss

Many people use detox and fasting programs for various reasons, among them to rid the body of toxins, increase health benefits and gain energy. A key aspect of most detox and fasting programs is that they also help you lose weight.

The Salt Water Cleanse

The salt detox program (also called a salt water cleanse) consists of digesting one quart of lukewarm water mixed with one to two tablespoons of natural salt (such as sea salt). Stir or shake the mixture until the salt is dissolved. Having the effect of an oral enema, this solution will run through your body very quickly, since the body cannot digest it. This detox program should be performed on a day when you have plenty of time to stay home (near the bathroom.) Drink the salt water mixture and then lie down and massage your stomach and abdomen. Now might be a good time for some yoga stretches if you practice yoga. Most people report a bowel movement within 30 minutes to two hours. Several more may follow.

Salt Water Cleanse for Weight Loss

Once you have cleansed your system, restore it by eating yogurt (to replenish the beneficial bacteria in your colon), fresh fruits, vegetables and juices.

Almost all detox programs feature the colon cleanse in conjunction with dietary changes such as cutting down on or eliminating red meat, dairy products, processed foods and refined sugars, as well as all animal fats. What this means is that a lot of calories are eliminated because you are changing your diet to cut out the most calorie-laden foods. Eliminating all those calories will add to the benefits of your "weight loss cleanse."

Suggestions and Warnings

It is often recommended that you fast for a day or at least a night before you do a salt water cleanse, or make sure you have a bowel movement before the cleanse. For obvious reasons, you want to experience the least discomfort possible. If there is extensive fecal matter in the colon, you will eliminate it very quickly when the salt water flush runs through your system.

Do not use table salt for a cleanse. It will not have the same effect. Sea salt is most often recommended.

The Best Foods for the Immune System

The best foods for the immune system are generally those that have been processed the least. Not only do fresh foods contain all the essential vitamins and minerals that modern research has identified as essential to immune system function, but they also contain trace non-essential nutrients, or phytonutrients, that are important, but haven't been fully studied yet.

Vegetables Rich in Vitamin A

Dark leafy greens and bright orange or yellow vegetables like carrots, squash and sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A. Foods with vitamin A are important for healthy skin and mucous membranes, which are your immune system's first defense against infection.

Sources of Vitamin C

Foods rich in vitamin C are essential for overall immune function and may help prevent cancer. Fruits like oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, strawberries and cantaloupe are familiar sources of vitamin C, but vegetables like bell peppers, cauliflower and raw broccoli are also good sources of vitamin C.

Protein Sources

Meats and other protein foods are important sources of B vitamins and zinc. B vitamins support the fundamental immune response and aid in the formation of vitamins; zinc promotes healthy white blood cells and skin healing.

Fish

Research by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease suggests that omega-3 fatty acids found in cold water fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel and sardines may help regulate the immune system, lessening the effects of autoimmune disorders like arthritis and lupus, and helping prevent the rejection of transplanted organs.

Phytonutrient-Rich Foods

Garlic, onions, green tea and certain mushrooms like shiitake and maitake contain phytonutrients that may improve the function of white blood cells, and help the immune system ward off the effects of aging and disease, including cancer.

What Are Some Fruits That Make You Lose Weight?

What Are Some Fruits That Make You Lose Weight?

Besides being a great source of nutrition, fruits can help you lose weight because they are high in volume and fiber and low in calories. Whole fresh fruit is best for weight loss. Canned fruit often contains heavy syrup, which adds unneeded calories. Dried fruit contains about four times the energy as raw fruit per weight unit because the water content has been removed.

Orange Fruits

Pumpkins, mangoes, papayas, peaches, cantaloupes and oranges are high in Vitamins C and A and are low in calories, with low sugar and fat content. Orange fruits also contain beta carotene, which helps protect against stomach, esophageal and lung cancer.

Red Fruits

Red fruits include strawberries, raspberries, persimmons, watermelon, tomatoes and pink grapefruit. Like orange fruits, red fruits contain beta carotene. They also contain lycopene, which may assist the body in fighting prostate and lung cancer. The benefits of pink grapefruit are similar to those of white grapefruit. Grapefruit lowers insulin levels, making the body feel less hungry.

Purple Fruits

Acai berries, blueberries and concord grapes are quickly gaining popularity for their weight-loss benefits. The purple fruits contain anthocyanins, which may help stave off cancer and heart disease. Purple fruits are high in antioxidants, which rid the body of harmful, fat-promoting toxins.

White Fruits

White fruits include apples, bananas and pears. Besides being a natural detoxifier, apples are high in fiber and water, but low in calories. Bananas have a high potassium content and help lower blood pressure, which is often a problem in obese individuals. They help the body absorb nutrients and replace electrolytes. Bananas also contain allicin and anthoxanthins, which may help prevent stomach cancer.

In Conclusion

All fruits are high in fiber and contain natural sugars. Many fruits also contain natural chemicals that ward off toxins and help the body function in its optimal capacity.

Two-Day Body Cleanse

Proponents of cleanses believe they can help rid the body of toxins that create a lack of energy, dull-looking skin and hair, and keep our bodies from performing at their optimal levels. You may want to try a two-day body cleanse when you are feeling bloated from eating too many processed foods, or even after the holidays when sugar, alcohol and rich foods have been consumed. A two-day body cleanse is easier to do than some of the longer cleanses, prompting you to stick with it.

Before the Cleanse

Before starting any cleanse or juice fast, start limiting foods that are not healthy, such as refined or processed foods, animal products, sugar and fatty foods. Weaning yourself off foods that do not offer health benefits may make the two-day body cleanse easier to stick with, because you may have fewer withdrawal symptoms or headaches.

Fasting is believed by some to rid the body of toxins through losing body fat. Since the body must metabolize fat during a cleanse, toxins may be released into the system and eliminated through urine or sweat. Getting rid of these toxins may lead to improved organ function, restored energy levels and an overall improvement of health.

During the Cleanse

During the two-day body cleanse, consume nothing but natural, raw fruits and vegetables in their juice form. You may need to purchase a juicer, since it can use the entire fruit or vegetable to give you all the vitamins, antioxidants and minerals necessary, as well as the fiber from the skins.

Since your calorie intake will be low, rest is suggested during the cleanse to conserve energy. Side effects of a two-day cleanse can include low blood pressure, hunger, dizziness or fainting, since the body is not consuming whole food. Keeping a cleanse to two days is beneficial yet safer for the body than a longer cleanse. There may be a lower risk of suffering from malnutrition or deficiencies in vitamins or minerals.

Drink between 32 and 64 ounces of fresh juice each day of the cleanse, using raw fruits and vegetables such as carrots, cranberries, beets, apples, cabbage and celery. Citrus fruits should be avoided, since they metabolize differently within the body. In addition to the juice, drink 64 ounces of room-temperature water to flush out toxins.

After the Cleanse

Once the two-day body cleanse is over, begin introducing foods back into the body slowly to avoid diarrhea and other digestive issues. The first day after the cleanse, incorporate pieces of whole fruit in addition to water. The second day should include steamed, nonstarchy vegetables, like spinach, celery, zucchini or eggplant. On the third day, include rice and salads. The fourth, fifth, and sixth days should have eggs, proteins and grains. After a week of incorporating healthier food choices into the diet, energy may increase, as well as feelings of alertness and overall health.

What Foods Are the Best Source of Iron?

Lack of iron is the world's most prevalent diet deficiency. Women are most at risk of having a low iron level. An average woman needs 18 milligrams of iron per day, while men need an average of 10. Women of child-bearing age must ensure they are getting enough iron in their diets to prevent iron-deficiency anemia, which can increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. This can be accomplished by eating foods that are rich in iron, along with foods that contain high levels of Vitamin C.

Vitamin C and Calcium

Eat foods that contain a lot of Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron. This is particularly helpful if you are a vegetarian. Typically, vegetarians consume less iron because they get the mineral from plant foods rather than meat. This problem can be counteracted by consuming foods that are high in calcium, which makes iron more easily absorbed into the blood. Iron is ample in foods such as beans, whole grains, spinach and dried fruit. All of these are good choices for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

Red Meat and Iron-Rich Cereal

Eat red meat, which is a good source of iron. If you are concerned about fat, choose leaner cuts of meat. Pork and lamb are also good sources of iron, as is liver. Iron-enriched cereal is a good source of iron, and many cereals are now fortified with iron. Check out the labels for the amounts listed. The brand Total contains one of the highest levels available. Cream of Wheat cereal provides 10 milligrams of iron in a one-cup serving, making it a good source of iron.

Grains, Legumes and Vegetables

Brown rice and whole grain bread offer a good amount of fiber and lots of iron. Eat an English muffin for breakfast, or try a bowl of oatmeal. Pita bread and Raisin Bran cereal have high levels of iron as well. Sunflower seeds, kidney beans and chickpeas are all high in iron and easy to add to your meals.Try tossing some sunflower seeds or kidney beans into your salads. Potatoes and broccoli are great sources of iron and fiber and make healthy additions to your diet.

Finally, try taking a tablespoon or two of blackstrap molasses twice a day to boost your iron level. Blackstrap molasses is also high in potassium. For better flavor, you can add it to coffee or milk.

Adding some of these foods to your diet will help with low iron levels. If you suspect your iron is still low, check with your physician. He will determine whether you need an iron supplement.

Diet to Lose 60 Pounds Fast

Want to lose 60 pounds in a hurry? Rapid weight loss can be dangerous if not done properly and under a physician's direct supervision. By understanding the safe levels of weight loss and the right way to combine diet and exercise to achieve your goals, you can lose your 60 pounds in six months without risking your health or well-being.

Weight Loss Basics

The only medically guaranteed way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in over a sustained period of time. One pound of body weight equals 3,500 calories, so you need to expend (or not consume) 3,500 calories to lose one pound. You can do this by reducing your caloric intake, engaging in aerobic exercise, or both. Experts suggest that the maximum safe amount of weight to lose is 2.5 pounds per week. To calculate how many calories you can safely lose, use an online calorie calculator to figure out what your daily need is, and then use that to figure out how many calories you can eliminate each day.

Diet

Forget carbohydrates and fat: The key to weight loss is to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet, making sure that you restrict the total number of calories. Although you can choose to eat fewer carbs or fat grams, the real key is calories. You stand a better chance of losing weight through diet modification than through exercise alone. Eat things that are low in calories but high in fiber to help you feel fuller and more satisfied, and be conscious of everything that passes betwixt your lips: Hidden calories can be the most dangerous.

Exercise

After you figure out your basic daily calorie needs, you can help create a calorie deficit by exercising. Although exercising will not compensate for a poor diet, exercise improves your cardiovascular health, which is inherently a good thing. Use an exercise calculator to figure out how much your activity is contributing to your weight-loss plan.

Detox Juicing Diet

A detox juicing diet is a diet that consists solely of fruit and vegetables in liquid form, as well as water. It is typically recommended by certified dietitians to help extremely obese patients lose weight, or for people looking to flush toxins from their system. A juicing diet is considered one of the most extreme forms of detoxification, as it one of the few that does not involve solid food. That is why anyone who wishes to follow the plan should consult a doctor first.

  1. Basics

    • The purpose of most detox diets is to rid the body, particularly the liver, from the buildup of toxins--which can enter your system through the foods you eat or even the air you breathe. The typical juicing diet lasts anywhere from one to three days. Anything longer than that requires strict medical supervision, as the plan does not provide all the vitamins and nutrients recommended.

    Juicing

    • Anyone following a detox juicing diet will need the assistance of a juicing machine, or "juicer." Most quality machines can be purchased for about $200 and come with a juicing diet menu (although not a detox menu). The machine makes juicing easy, as all you need to do is put the fruit or vegetable through the top and allow the juicer to turn it into liquid form.

    Detox Plan

    • A detox juicing diet should consist of 40 oz. to 65 oz. of juice per day. Fruits and vegetables can be mixed in any fashion and include apples, cranberries, tomatoes, celery, spinach, beets and carrots. Citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines and lemons are typically avoided because of their sometimes negative affects on the stomach. Also, most people on a detox juicing diet use only organic produce. Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables are not allowed because of their high sodium and sugar content.

    Side Effects

    • While most side effects of a detox juicing diet are temporary, they should be taken seriously, and if they become severe, the diet should be discontinued immediately. Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, acne, increased body odor and a lack of energy. Also, one typical result that many people consider a positive is weight loss. However, losing too much weight in too short of a time is dangerous and can cause damage to key organs such as the kidneys.

    Summary

    • A detox juicing diet has been proven to help rid the body of toxins and be beneficial to overall health. No one should go on such a diet more than once each year. It is also recommended that anyone on a detox diet should drink six 8 oz. glasses of water per day along with the juice. Once the detox is complete, a return to solid foods should be gradual, with an emphasis on healthy choices.

How to Manage the Signs and Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

The most effective way to manage the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism is to treat their source and restore thyroid function. Hypothyroidism, or sluggish thyroid function, can be either a result of iodine deficiency--rare in the United States--or it can stem from an autoimmune condition such as Hashimoto's Disease. Symptoms include lethargy, hair loss, weight gain, depression, and elevated cholesterol levels. It's easy to confuse symptoms of hypothyroidism with signs of many other common ailments, but a simple blood test can establish whether you are suffering from hypothyroidism.

Instructions

    1

Take artificial thyroid hormone medication if you suffer from clinical hypothyroidism. Your doctor will perform a blood test to evaluate your levels of TSH, or Thyroid Replacement Hormone, which your body produces when your thyroid is not functioning effectively. Schedule regular blood tests if you're taking thyroid medication to recheck your TSH levels and adjust the dosage of the medication.

    2

Consume foods high in tyrosine, such as lean meats, fish, and poultry, as well as lentils, avocados, bananas, and seeds such as sesame and sunflower seeds. Avoid vegetables in the brassica family such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, and kale. Also minimize your consumption of soy.

    3

Take a vitamin B complex supplement. Use iodized salt. Do not take an iodine supplement because normal amounts of iodized salt can give you all the iodine you need, and taking too much iodine can negatively impact your thyroid function.

Hypothyroid Weight Loss Plan

Hypothyroidism affects approximately five in 100 Americans, most of whom are women. This thyroid disorder occurs when the gland's functioning slows down, which disrupts certain other functions within the body, such as metabolism. Those suffering from hypothyroidism are likely to gain weight due to the slowing of the metabolism. However, once the thyroid gland is under control, there are ways to lose such weight in a healthy way.

Thyroid Control

Metabolism in the body is regulated by the thyroid gland. Unfortunately, hypothyroidism sufferers do not detect that there is an initial problem with the thyroid gland until after they have gained weight as a result of metabolic dysfunction. Once diagnosed by a doctor, proper treatment may take some time, perhaps months. An endocrinologist will test the blood for TSH levels and prescribe thyroid medication, such as Synthroid. Regular blood tests will be given to determine whether or not the right amount of medication is present in the body.

Medication should be taken as directed; otherwise it will not work properly. For example, the common Synthroid medication has to be taken every morning on an empty stomach in order to work efficiently.

Only after assuring that a patient is getting the right amount of thyroid medication will weight loss be feasible. An individual under treatment will be able to detect future thyroid problems if they start to gain weight again after losing it.

Losing Weight

According to "Thyroid and Weight," individuals with hypothyroidism usually gain between five and 10 pounds, most of which is water weight. Losing this weight does not happen immediately upon treatment. Unfortunately, as with any prior weight gain, losing the extra pounds takes time and effort.

Cutting calories does not equal successful weight loss with hypothyroid individuals, unless they had consumed an excessive amount prior to treatment. The primary way to lose weight gained through hypothyroidism is through regular exercise. According to vaxa.com, an individual under treatment for hypothyroidism should exercise for 60 minutes every day in order to lose weight. Also, strength training will aid in building muscles and revving up the metabolism, which will further enhance weight loss.

A person who has hypothyroidism should also be aware of the types of foods they consume. Foods that are rich in vitamin A, such as carrots, help support the thyroid gland. Iodine-rich foods are also vital to thyroid function. Iodine can be found in eggs, seafood and iodized salt.

There are also certain foods to avoid while under thyroid treatment, such as caffeine and alcohol, as they can further disrupt the body's natural metabolic flow.
